Formative and Summative Research
Formative research is a research that occurs before implementing the studies or during conducting the studies. It is a throughout testing all the way to the end of you creating process so that it will help you understand and define the studies and to help you to reach the target market specifically. It will also ensure your design or ideas are acceptable and feasible before launching it.
With conducting this research you will be able to keep improving your ideas and also covering a wide range how the overall picture you will get in detail and informatively. The information you collected uses a lot of qualitative research
Unlike formative research, Summative research is a research that conducted only after the ideas or design are launched. The objective of this research is to provide you with the information of 'are you successfully reach you target market' or used when you want to know 'how many' or 'how often'. Summative research used a lot of quantitative research as how the answer you will get are in numeric and statistical measurement.
The General methods that was used by both research are Qualitative and Quantitative research.
There's two ways to conduct qualitative research :
1. Focus Group Discussion - a discussion that intended to identify the beliefs and opinions.
2. An in-depth Interview - a one on one discussion to provide a detail information about the specific area of interest.
For quantitative research, you can conduct the research on the spot like providing short surveys with 3 question.

An illustration of an examples can be taken from the current real life project i'm doing for my graduation project. I can conduct a formative research before and during my progress on graduation project, so that it can helps me improve the ideas, myself and my skill set in order i am able to reach and maintain my target market. And by the end of my project outcome i can conduct summative research which can be done during the grad show after the project finished to know whether i achieve or reach my target audience.
As a creative people or designer, formative research is very important aspect. What we do is a theory that must apply to practice for future project a.k.a continuous style. But sometimes we must also think out of the box and depart from the traditional research. Design is alive and research tell you to change to improve. That's why research and design goes hand in hand.
